Smishing You were Here

Not a new Pink Floyd song but another security threat. Smishing, or phishing using SMS, is the latest way scammers want you to give up private information. Short Message Service (SMS) is one of the ways text messages are sent to/from a cellphone or mobile device.
The way the scam works is like this: a text message is sent by a scammer that suggests you login to a website to avoid service charges (or some other ruse). Once you visit (not login) the website, the user is prompted to download a program which is most likely spyware or a virus.
There is no automated way of stopping this except by user education. It may be possible that antivirus or antispyware programs can scan the downloaded badware before it is installed but there is no guarantee.
